Earth: Arashi Rikan III as Jihizo, 1852 - Dramatic portrait of the actor Arashi Rikan III as Jihizo in the kabuki play "Honcho Nijushiko." In a famous scene called "Digging up Bamboo Shoots," Jihizo and his brother fight over who gets to dig up the box buried by their deceased father, which contains his secrets of samurai strategy. Here, Jihizo grips the handle of his shovel as he wrestles with his brother in the snow. One sleeve of his blue outer kimono is pushed down to the waist, revealing a red robe with a blue tie-dyed pattern. He scowls as he swings his weapon, snow-covered bamboo framing the wintry gray sky behind him as large flakes of snow fall over the scene. A handsome design.
