Iwai Shijaku I as Koshimoto Chidori, 1842

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Iwai Shijaku I as the koshimoto or ladies' maid Chidori in Act II of the play "Hiragana seisuiki" at the Kawarazaki Theater. She looks over her shoulder with a rather crazed grin, one sleeve draped over her hand. Her kimono features maples leaves and splashing water, tied with a green obi decorated with floral medallions. Her hair is adorned with a red lacquer comb with birds flying above water, a hairpin, ribbons, and a cluster of small white flowers. A poem by the actor appears above. A nicely detailed design.
