Scene from Toshitoku Soga Matsu no Shimadai, 1857

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "Toshitoku Soga Matsu no Shimadai" at the Nakamura Theater of Ishii Tsuneemon standing in an interior at right, looking over his shoulder with a slightly worried frown. At left, the yakko or footman Ishii Shimobe Tosuke grins as he stands beside a folding screen, looking down at Itto Sachuta, who scratches his head in a puzzled manner. At right, a pillow rests atop a futon, with a maple leaf lacquer tobacco set sitting atop a game board for ban-sugoroku nearby. From left, the actors are Otani Tokuji II, Nakamura Fukusuke I, and Kataoka Nizaemon VIII. Nice expressive figures in an attractively detailed setting.

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 19 5/8" + margins as shown
