Eighth Month: Hazuki, circa 1850 -1851 - Lovely autumn scene of Prince Genji playing a flute outside the garden gate of a young beauty's home in a parody of the tale of Ushiwakamaru serenading Joruri. At left, the nobleman stands at the garden gate, his sword bearer crouching beside him. Two smiling attendants whisper to each other inside the courtyard, one shielding a lantern with her kimono sleeve. Inside the home, the beauty plays the koto, kneeling over her instrument, a young girl with a fan sitting beside her. A full moon glows softly in the dark night sky above the water, the garden bordered with fall grasses and blossoms. A charming design with wonderful detail.
