Comments - Handsome triptych depicting a scene from the play "Jiraiya goketsu monogatari" (The Heroic Tales of Jiraiya), which tells the story of the young magician Jiraiya. Here, Ichikawa Danjuro VIII appears at right on the verandah of a palace, holding a pipe in one hand as he looks up, watching as geese descend for the evening past a glowing full moon. His black outer robe featured dragon medallions and a subtle burnished scroll design in the black areas. One of the shogun's high-ranking officers, Takasago Yuminosuke, portrayed by Arashi Rikan III, sneaks around the corner at left, brandishing an iron truncheon. He wears an elegant fringed robe patterned with a dragon and sacred jewels over his armor. In the center, Iwai Kumesaburo III plays the beauty Princess Tagoto, who is actually Teruta, smiling as she looks over her shoulder while playing the koto. A great design with a beautifully detailed setting.
