The Nun Shogetsu, 1860

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene from a play at the Nakamura Theater in Edo of the nun Shogetsu at left wearing a fantastic kimono patterned with feathers. She lifts her sleeves like wings as she crouches, as if to take flight like a bird. In the center, an elderly woman slowly reaches for a sword, frowning as she watches the beauty intently. The samurai at right frowns glumly, a carp tied to the sword resting over his shoulder. From left, the actors are Nakamura Shikan IV, Onoe Baiko 4.5, and Kataoka Nizaemon VII. An intriguing design with expressive figures, attractively colored.

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 29" + margins as shown
