Series; Eastern Magic Lantern Slides of a Charming Figure

Concert Scene from Inaka Genji, 1847 - 1852 - Handsome scene from the story "A False Murasaki's Rustic Genji" (Nise Murasaki inaka Genji), a parody of the beloved "Tale of Genji" which recounts the adventures of Mitsuuji, the Rustic or Country Genji. The young Mitsuuji sits on a cushion in the center, playing flute and looking slyly at the beauty at left, who strums a biwa or Japanese lute. She smiles back at him happily, their companions listening to the music with pleasure. An offering tray in the center holds stacked red lacquer sake cups next to a tray of refreshments. The room is elegantly decorated with fine lacquer stands at right holding stacks of books, scrolls, and boxes, and a folding screen patterned with cherry blossoms and reed blinds at left. A beautifully detailed subject bordered by softly shaded clouds.
