Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Danshichi Kurobei, 1855

Comments - Bold portrait of Ichikawa Kodanji IV as the otokodate or street knight Danshichi Kurobei, who killed his father-in-law during an argument. Here, he looks ahead with a grim frown as he grips his weapon with both hands, aware that his act will be punishable by death. A circular inset above features his smiling wife Okaji, unaware of the violent confrontation. The inset features Iwai Kumesaburo III. A nice large expressive figure.
