Nakamura Fukusuke I in Three Roles, 1859

Comments - Terrific print depicting Kawarazaki Gonjuro I in three roles from the kabuki plays. From the top down, the roles are the blind warrior Kagekiyo, the beauty Toshima from Kachofogetsu, and a pinwheel seller. The portraits are presented in three shaped insets, the bottom one in the form of the Toshidama seal of the Utagawa School of artists, to which Toyokuni III belonged. The background features a bold rectangular pattern, divided diagonally with red above and dark blue blue-gray below. A handsome design, detailed with embossing on the white kimono collars.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 9 3/4"

Condition - Nice detail. Vertical fold near side, a few creases
