Prince on Horseback and Playful Beauty, 1853

Comments - Charming kabuki scene of a beauty playfully tugging on the rope lead of a prince's horse, preventing him from leaving. She tumbles backwards with the effort, falling back on one hand as she smiles at her companion, her floral outer robe spreading out onto the ground around her. The nobleman stares back at her with a solemn frown, holding the striped reins of his lively dappled horse. At left, a guard scratches his head with a puzzled expression, a black lacquer water dipper in his other hand. From left, the actors are Arashi Kichisaburo III, Kataoka Gado II, and Onoe Kikujiro II. An interesting subject with soft shading on the night sky and an embossed geometric pattern on the beauty's white robe.
