Heroes Together at the Tori-no-machi Festival: Nakamura Fukusuke I and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I, 1859

Comments - Handsome scene featuring from left, the kabuki actors Nakamura Fukusuke I and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I, attending the Tori-no-machi Festival at night. AT left, Fukusuke I carries a lantern on a small pole, taking a toothpick from his mouth as he turns to chat with his companion. Gonjuro I looks back at him with a worried expression, frowning slightly. He carries a rake decorated for a festival with a small target and arrow and other objects. He wears a black and gray coat with stripes and a geometric pattern, a blue robe draped over one shoulder. Behind them, the rooftops of the city are silhouetted in black against the dark night sky. A great image with large expressive figures and soft shading.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 19 1/2"

Condition - Nice detail. Vertical centerfolds, light diagonal crease in left panel. A few small repairs.
