Nakamura Fukusuke as Fuku no Tsubone and Nakamura Gantaro as the Puppeteer, 1854

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of Nakamura Fukusuke as Fuku no tsubone performing "ningyoburi," a style of acting imitating the exaggerated motions of puppets. She stands at the foot of the steps to a mansion, a black lacquer box in her hand and a pink kimono draped over her head. Her kimono is patterned with chrysanthemum blossoms supported by paper collar. At lower left, Nakamura Gantaro serves as a puppeteer, pretending to pose the actor. A handsome depiction of this unusual type of performance.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 9 3/4"

Condition - Nice detail. Partially backed with paper. Light crease at edge.
