Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Seishin, a monk of Gokuraku-ji Temple, in the play "Kosode Soga Azami no Ironui" at the Ichimura Theater. Standing on a bridge, he looks over his shoulder with a frown, his brows furrowed as he stretches a dotted cloth between his hands. Seishin was banished after he had an affair with the geisha Izayoi, and the pair decided to commit suicide by leaping into the river, but neither one drowns. Ships are anchored in the harbor at left, with buildings on the shore beneath tall trees at right. An expressive figure, nicely detailed with soft shading on the night sky.
