Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene from the play "Azuma Kudari Gojusan Tsugi" of the packhorse driver Dohachi attacking and robbing the traveler Naosuke Gonbei, who strikes Dohachi over the shoulder with a covered pole arm as he sprawls on the ground at right. At left, the beauty and thief Hitomaru Oroku is engaged in a tug of war with Dohachi over a striped cloth. She grins slyly as she holds the sash above her head, a moneybag in her other hand. Rows of undulating water run across the background, with buildings lining the shore receding into the distance beneath the night sky. From left, the actors are Bando Shuka I, Arashi Rikan III, and Ichikawa Kodanji IV. A handsome design with an attractive setting.
