Series; Eastern Magic Lantern Slides of a Charming Figure

Fireflies in Darkness, 1847 - 1852 - Interesting scene from the "Tale of Genji" of fireflies fluttering around in a room at night. The beauty at right raises her sleeve and turns her head as the insects fly about her head, glowing yellow against the wall panels. She holds a section of a folding screen before her, as a young man seated on a mat on the other side watches with an anxious frown. The woman sitting behind him holds a round fan, her hand thrown out in a questioning manner. At left, a nobleman seems to be hiding behind an elegant kimono patterned with blossoms and folding fans, smiling as he peers over the edges. An intriguing subject, beautifully detailed.
