Series; A Comparison of Loyal Retainers

The 47 Ronin, Act 1: Nakamura Shikan II as Kono Moronao and Iwai Hanshiro VI as Lady Kaoyo, 1832 - Handsome kabuki double portrait from Act 1 of "The Storehouse of Loyal Retainers" (Kanadehon Chushingura), the famous drama about the 47 ronin. In act I, Lady Kaoyo, the wife of Lord Hangan, has arrived at Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine to identify the helmet of a fallen samurai. While there, Lord Kono Moronao makes unwanted advances towards her, which she refuses. Here, she looks up with a distraught expression, aghast at his conduct, as she holds the helmet topped with a dragon figurine. Moronao reacts to her rebuff angrily, grimacing with rage. He wears a voluminous green robe with white paulownia crests and a tall black court cap. From left, the actors are Iwai Hanshiro VI and Nakamura Shikan II. Nice large expressive figures, attractively colored and detailed.
