The Battle of Yashima

Comments - Great depiction of the famous Battle of Yashima between the Minamoto and Taira clans. At lower left, an archer on a boat has just fired an arrow, knocking his enemy from his black horse at lower right. Just to the right of the black horse, another archer takes aim beneath a pin tree. At top center, two warriors grapple on a small grassy island amidst the crashing waves. At upper left, one of the most famous archery feats in Japanese history is depicted. The Taira set a fan atop a pole on one of their ships and dared the Minamoto to knock it off. The famous archer Nasu no Yoichi rode out into the water on his horse and fired an arrow, sending the fan flying. A beauty sitting in the Taira boat below looks up in surprise at the arrow whizzing past overhead. A lively scene with wonderful detail.
