The Battle of Kawanakajima, circa 1830s - Fantastic illustration of the Battle of Kawanakajima between the forces of the two great generals Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin. In the center, Kenshin charges into the enemy's camp on a brown horse, slashing at Shingen with his sword. Leaping up from his folding camp stool, the surprised Shingen deflects the blow with his own weapon, a string of prayer beads lying at his feet. The battle rages fiercely all around them on both banks of the river, as swords and spears fly. At far left, a samurai on a black horse grips an enormous iron club above his head with both hands, facing a warrior monk on a dappled horse who draws back his sword. Men tumble to the ground amidst the heavy fighting, abandoned weapons lying nearby. A dramatic scene packed with terrific detail, each warrior carefully identified with a name cartouche. A great triptych illustrating the famous 16th century war between Kai and Echigo provinces.
