Konoshita Soga megumi no masagoji, 1851

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "Konoshita Soga Megumi no Masagoji" at the Nakamura Theater in Edo, a tale about the robber Ishikawa Goemon, who was sentenced to death by boiling after attempting to kill a powerful daimyo. Here, two men hold back his wife Oritsu as she throws her hands out in alarm. Guards are lined up behind them inside a fenced enclosure, with a crowd gathered outside to watch the execution as smoke billows up into the sky. Onoe Kikujiro II plays Oritsu. Nicely detailed.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14 5/8" x 9 7/8" + margins as shown

Condition - Good detail. A few repairs, horizontal centerfold, creasing throughout.
