Ichi-no-tani mushae no iezuto, 1849

Comments - Great kabuki scene from the play "Ichi-no-tani mushae no iezuto" at the Kawarazaki Theater in Edo of Nagatani Hachiro attempting to restrain the warrior Kagekiyo in the center. Kagekiyo looks over his shoulder with an angry frown as he grabs his attacker by the neck, pushing him away. The sleeves of his kimono stick out like wings at his side and his unusual hairstyle and stage makeup add to the samurai's imposing appearance. At lower left, Kagekiyo's daughter Hitomaru looks up at him with a sweet smile as Nitta Shiro stands behind her, a tightlipped frown on his face. At right, samurai Chichibujiro Shigetada glares at Kagekiyo, while Kagekiyo's wife Akoya watches him with a sly smile. From left, the actors are Bando Takesaburo I, Ichikawa Shinsha I, Ichikawa Danjuro VIII, Seki Kasuke II. Onoe Kikujiro II as Akoya, and Bando Hikosaburo IV. An interesting design, nicely detailed.
