Koshoku Shimada monogatari, 1850

Comments - Terrific scene from the kabuki drama "Koshoku Shimada monogatari" at the Ichimura Theater in Edo showing a fisherman rescuing a beauty from the river. Smiling kindly as he holds a fire basket high overhead, Kinukawaya Yoemon grabs the ponytail of the beauty Miura no Takao as she looks fearfully over her shoulder at the samurai Okita Juzaburo, who sits in another boat. The warrior shields his head from the rain with his hat as he looks coldly at the distraught woman, his other hand holding his covered sword. The city stretches out along the riverbank in the distance under slanting raindrops, the sky darkening to deep gray. From left, the actors are Sawamura Sojuro V, Onoe Baiko IV, and Ichimura Uzaemon XII. A dramatic design with fine shading on the water and sky.
