Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Aoto Banashi" at the Ichimura Theater in Edo. Several men have arrived for an audience with the Kamakura era warrior and chief of police Aoto Saemon Fujitsuna, played by Nakamura Utaemon IV, who sits in a canopied room surrounded by sliding screens, wearing formal court robes and a black court cap. Two young pages sit behind him, one holding his sword upright. Three of the visitors are clad in simple, pale blue kimono, bowing forward respectfully. The samurai Kanashi Tosho and the beauty Izayoi kneel on a low platform at right, the woman grinning coyly and looking at the daimyo out of the corners of her eyes. The group at far left seems rather unhappy, a disgruntled older man frowning angrily and the young man in the checked robe looking up rather sheepishly, his brows furrowed. Seki Sanjuro III plays Tosho and Bando Shuka I appears as Izayoi. Nice expressive faces and interaction between the figures.
