Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Horaisan Yotsugi Soga" at the Ichimura Theater in Edo, a drama about the famous Soga Brothers, whose father was killed by the nobleman Ichiro Betto Suketsune when they were boys. At left, Soga Goro confronts Suketsune, who sits on at platform at right, wearing a fantastic matching coat and kimono featuring bonsai pine trees surrounded by miniature cloth panels like those used in enclose samurai encampments. The beauty Oisa no Tora stands behind him, grinning as she holds a comb wrapped in tissue paper. In the center, Kobayashi Asahina attempts to intervene, looking up with a worried expression as he lifts his hat above his head. He is instantly recognizable by his "monkey" makeup. Goro holds an umbrella over his shoulder, his black kimono decorated with colorful butterflies. The actors include Nakamura Fukusuke I as Asahina, Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Suketsune, and Bando Shuka I as Oiso no Tora. A handsome design, nicely detailed.
