Comments - Terrific scene from the Battle of Yashima, a fierce combat at sea between the Minamoto and Taira clans and site of one of the most famous archery feats in Japanese history. The Taira set a fan atop a pole on one of their ships and dared the Minamoto to knock it off. The famous archer Nasu no Yoichi rode out into the water on his horse and fired an arrow, sending the fan flying as seen near the top of the center panel in tiny detail. Yoichi is astride his horse in the water at the upper left of the right panel. At lower left, Taira Noritsune has just released an arrow from the deck of a small boat, killing the Minamoto warrior Sato Tsugunobu, who falls from his horse on the shore at upper right. A fantastic image from this legendary battle with a dynamic composition and wonderful detail.
