Daikokuten: Ichikawa Danjuro VIII, 1853 - Handsome kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro VIII from a series pairing actors with Japan's beloved "Seven Gods of Good Fortune." He stands alongside the water's edge wearing a black kimono decorated with bats, a fan in one hand and a cloth draped over his shoulder. At left, a tobacco set rests on a bench extending over the water with oversized peonies beyond. The inset at upper right depicts the Lucky God Daikokuten with his bag of treasure over his shoulder. Nicely detailed with soft shading on the water and sky. The first time we've seen this attractive design.
