Scene from Sugawara Denju Tenerai Kagami, 1850

Comments - Interesting kabuki portrait of Ichimura Uzaemon XII as Sakuramaru, one of samurai triplets in the play "Sugawara Denju Tenerai Kagami" at the Ichimura Theater. Wearing a boldly checked kimono, he looks to the side with a worried expression as he holds a large basket hat under his arm, his two swords at his side. The scene takes place at Domiyoji Temple, the fence surrounding the grounds running across the background and creating a striking backdrop for the figure beneath a softly shaded night sky. A handsome design.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 9 5/8" + top margin as shown

Condition - Good detail. Wormholes, repaired. Wrinkling along top edge.
