Series; Ukiyo-e Comparisons of the Cloudy Chapters of Genji, 1845 - 1846

Tenarai, Chapter 53 - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Sugawara Denju Tenerai Kagami" showing the warrior Matsuomaru holding his sword under the chin of a small boy kneeling before him. The samurai wears a voluminous kimono patterned with snow-covered pines, a stern expression on his face as he looks down at the child. The scowling henchman Genba stands behind him in a dramatic black robe, white hair framing his red face. The title cartouche takes the form of an open scroll with a vignette of books, brushes, and a stack of poem slips. A terrific image from this popular play that tells the story of the noted scholar and calligrapher Sugawara no Michizane.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)
