Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Miracle of Masterpieces by Ukiyo Matabei, 1853

Comments - Terrific depiction of the artist Ukiyo Matabei's Otsu-e characters coming to life. The artist sits in on a cushion with a brush in hand, looking up with a worried expression as the figures dance in a yellow cloud above him. In a comic touch, Kuniyoshi has used portraits of famous actors as the figures. They are: Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Ukiyo Matabei, Asao Okuyama as the thunder god, Arashi Kangoro as Geiho (the man with a rust colored hat), Nakamura Kantaro as the falconer, and Sakata Sajuro as Lucky God Fukurokujo (with the elongated forehead). An amusing subject.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 3/4"

Condition - Good detail. A few small repairs.
