Kamada Matahachi; Benkei Carrying a Bell, circa 1845 - 1846 - Terrific image from Kuniyoshi's series pairing figures with otsu-e, traditional folk paintings sold to travelers during the Edo era in Otsu on Lake Biwa near Kyoto. Here, Kamada Matahachi carries an enormous pot over his shoulder, a broom in his other hand and a scroll and a saw tucked into his obi. The inset at upper rights shows Benkei carrying the temple bell from Mii-era. A great design from a rarely seen series.
