Minamoto no Yoritomo's Hunt at Fuji, circa 1839 - 1841

Comments - Terrific depiction of the Shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo's famous hunt on the plains of Mt. Fuji. He watches from astride a dappled horse at right, a retainer sheltering him with a red umbrella. At left, a samurai on horseback stabs at a deer on the ground with a bamboo spear, a warrior gripping a bow on the ground nearby. Beyond them, beaters can be seen in the distance flushing game using bamboo brooms. Mt. Fuji rises majestically in the distance, dominating the skyline. A handsome design, nicely detailed, in an unusual vertical format with panels in a size known as nagaban. The first time we've seen this subject.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Condition - This print with good detail as shown. Two separate panels, backed with paper. Horizontal folds. Large loss at corner, thinning at edge, a few holes, repaired. Wrinkling throughout, slight rubbing, staining. Please see photos for details.
