Nakamura Utaemon IV as Aoto Fujitsuna, 1846

Comments - Great kabuki portrait of Nakamura Utaemon IV as the samurai Aoto Fujitsuna in a scene from "Aoto zoshi." In the play, he is the head of police, dealing with a gang of thieves headed by Nippon Daemon. Here, he looks over his shoulder with a sober frown, his lips pressed tightly together. He wears formal court dress, with a blue vest and pants over a gray kimono and a tall black cap with brocade trim. Drapery with black and white bands hangs overhead, adding graphic impact. Includes embossing on the hilt of the sword. A nice large expressive figure.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14 3/8" x 9 5/8"

Condition - This print with nice detail as shown. Slight separation at ends of horizontal centerfold, a couple small holes, repaired. Rippling. Please see photos for details.
