Series; Matches for Thirty-six Selected Poems

Matches for Thirty-six Selected Poems - Handsome design from Kunisada's 1856 - 1857 series pairing kabuki scenes with Japan's famous "Thirty-six Poems," an anthology of waka verses by 6th - 9th century poets. Each print features actors in nicely detailed settings, with a still-life by Gengyo Miyagi and a poem in an inset above. Beautifully detailed and printed, many designs include deluxe publishing techniques such as embossing or burnishing. The series title is also translated as "The Thirty-six Outstanding Poems." An interesting group with expressive figures.

Iwai Kumesaburo III as Shusaku and Nakamura Fukusuke I as Wakana-hime, 1856 - Attractive kabuki design showing the Nakamura Fukusuke I as Princess Wakana and Iwai Kumesaburo III as the samurai Shusaku. The young warrior sits on the floor, leaning an elbow on a low table as he smiles happily up at the beauty. She holds a porcelain cup on a black lacquer stand, ready to serve him, tilting her head with a sly smile as she raises her sleeve. Wonderful detail in the interior setting, with gourd and vine patterned curtains hanging in the doorway at right, and a kettle on a warmer at far left.
