Hanano no tsuki utuo hitofushi, 1859

Comments - Great scene from the kabuki play "Hanano no tsuki utuo hitofushi" at the Nakamura Theater in Edo. A monk stands outside the garden gate at left, tilting his head with a worried expression as he eavesdrops on the couple inside a home. In the center, the wife Nishikigi looks up in alarm, throwing her hands out at her sides as the samurai Yasukata frowns dejectedly as he tucks one hand up his sleeve, the other gripping his sword. A boy clambers at his feet, throwing his hands up excitedly. An altar is arranged behind him with an ancestor tablet on a shelf and offerings, a lantern decorated with waterlilies hanging above. Red flames dance in the air between the couple, a sign of a supernatural occurrence, with undulating water beyond. From left, the actors are Onoe Baiko 4.5, Onoe Kikugoro IV, and Kataoka Nizaemon VIII. Wonderful detail in the interesting setting.
