Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play Date Kurabe Uwasa no Saya-ate at the Kawarazaki Theater in Edo. In the center, the samurai Fuwa Banzaemon grimaces angrily at his enemy Nagoya Sanza as he rubs the back of his head, a pipe in his other hand. Sanza stares to the side with a tightlipped frown, trying to control his temple. At left, the courtesan Kanbayashi Katsuragi, who is Sanza's wife, bites anxiously on a roll of tissues, her chrysanthemum print kimono trailing on the floor behind her. An elegant black lacquer tobacco set rests on the floor nearby, while a red lacquer table at left holds a platter of food. The curtains lining the back of the room feature a bold pattern of fans with flowers and plovers in fight against undulating water. From left, the actors are Sawamura Chojuro V, Ichikawa Ebizo V, and Onoe Baiko IV. A handsome design with wonderful detail in the setting and furnishings.
