Yukari no iro hagi no Murasaki, 1859

Comments - Interesting kabuki double portrait of Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Katanaya Hanshichi and Iwai Kumesaburo III as the geisha Ohana in the play "Yukari no iro hagi no Murasaki" at the Ichimura Theater in Edo. The couple holds hands, and their heads are covered with dotted cloths against the cool air. The beauty looks over her shoulder with a grin, the edge of her scarf caught between her teeth to keep it from blowing off. Hanshichi stares off into space with an unhappy frown. The background features a colorful green and red curtain patterned with folding fans, an ink stone, a blue and white bowl of water and a container of brushes. A handsome and unusual design.

Artist - Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 1/4" x 9 1/2" + margin as shown

Condition - Good detail. Vertical folds at sides, a few repairs and creases.
