Series; The Sixty-odd Provinces of Great Japan

The Sixty-odd Provinces of Great Japan - Around 1845, Kuniyoshi and Kunisada collaborated on a series depicting historic men and women or popular kabuki characters for each of the sixty-odd provinces of Japan. These great designs feature large, expressive figures by Kuniyoshi and Kunisada, with an inset of a related scene done by various students. Beautifully printed with attractive color and nice detail, these bold, dramatic images are a terrific choice for a collector interested in the history and legends of Japan.

Settsu Province: Dancer Sankatsu - Handsome portrait of the dancer Sankatsu looking up with a grin, wearing an intricately patterned floral kimono over a red under robe tied with a red obi, one bare foot peeping beneath the hem of her robe. A hand drum and a container of folding fans rests on the floor nearby. An inset above shows a commoner standing outside a doorway at night. An attractive design from a rarely seen series.
