Kinpeibai Soga no tamamono, 1860

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "Kinpeibai Soga no tamamono" at the Nakamura Theater in Edo of the daughter Chihaya watching two samurai practicing martial arts. In the center, Ohara Takejiro leaps agilely to avoid the naginata thrust at him by his companion Inabanosuke Komoto at lower right, a wooden practice sword held between his hands. The beauty looks up with an alarmed expression as she holds another wooden sword, her violet kimono bordered with flowing water and large flowers. Behind her, a dipper rests across the top of a stone water basin, and blossoming plum branches decorated the blue panels lining the back of the room. From left, the actors are Bando Tamasaburo II, Nakamura Fukusuke I, and Onoe Baiko 4.5. A handsome design with a nicely detailed setting.
