Sodegaura kokyo no Nishiki, 1855

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene from the play "Sodegaura kokyo no Nishiki" at the Kawarazaki Theater in Edo of Masaki Shozaburo attacking a man with his sword, raising the weapon high above his head with a distraught frown, his intended victim sprawling on the ground below. At right, Kiura Shingo recoils from the attack, throwing his hand out defensively as he falls backwards. A candle burns beside him, and a heavy kimono is piled atop a futon in the room beyond. From left, the actors are Arashi Rikan III and Kataoka Gado II. Expressive figures in a nicely detailed setting.

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 19 1/8" + margin as shown
