Stage Opening of Soga Kadomatsu

Comments - Interesting scene from the play "Soga Kadomatsu," a drama about the famous Soga Brothers, whose father was killed by the nobleman Kudo Suketsune when they were young boys. Here, the brothers confront Suketsune at a New Year's Day party. At left, Ichimura Uzaemon appears as Juro Sukenari with a hand drum under his arm, staring at Suketsune, who glares back at him with a flute in hand. At right, Soga Goro thrusts a drumstick at the samurai Asahina, who angrily prepares to draw his sword. His black robe and pants feature a design of arrows piercing targets. Small pine trees dot the background beyond a bamboo railing. Onoe Kikugoro III plays Suketsune. A great four-panel kabuki print with expressive figures.
