Satsuma Gengobei and the Geisha Koman, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Interesting scene from a kabuki play about the samurai Satsuma Gengobei, who fell in love with the geisha Koman. Here, Koman is writing on the back of her shamisen the characters for "godairiki," a pledge of fidelity when written by a geisha to her lover. Later, the evil samurai Sasano Sangobei, who had been spurned by Koman, altered the writing to look like a pledge of love to him, causing the enraged Gengobei to murder Koman. The beauty seems upset as she paints on the shamisen, while her lover watches her with an angry frown, a tobacco set and blue and white jar on the floor beside him. Two men eavesdrop outside the door at left, one a palanquin bearer and the other carrying a paper lantern on a pole. A handsome design with a nicely detailed setting, accented with a burnished checked pattern on Koman's obi.
