The Echigoya at New Year, 1830s

Comments - Charming scene of a beauties standing outside the Echigoya department store at New Year. At right, a woman leads a young girl by the hand, who smiles back at her companions. The beauty in the center wears a blue kimono patterned with snow-covered bamboo and plum blossoms. Blue curtains with the shop's circular white crest hang in front of the stores on either side of the street, with sacred shimenawa ropes hanging from the eaves and traditional pine and bamboo holiday decorations flanking the entrances. At top center, the snow-capped peak of Mt. Fuji rises above the clouds. A lovely design, nicely composed and detailed.

Artist - Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 28 3/8"

Condition - Good detail. Losses at edges, a few holes and thin spots, repaired. Creasing throughout.
