Hitokanade kodakara Soga, 1856

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "Hitokanade kodakara" Soga at the Nakamura theater in Edo, a play based on "Ooka Seidan," stories detailing famous cases solved by the Edo era magistrate Ooka Echizen-no-Kami Tadasuke. Here, the beauty Matsudaya Segawa stabs a monk's mantle with a knife, a broken string of prayer beads on the floor beside her. At left, Arakiya Gokyo holds an ancestor memorial tablet in his outstretched hand, looking back at her with a frown. Outside the doorway at right, a blind man Kiriyama Kenko listens to their conversation with a pained expression. The room is elegantly furnished with finely patterned screens and a large floral print kimono draped over a black lacquer stand. From left, the actors are Kataoka Gado II, Iwai Kumesaburo III, Seki Sanjuro III. An intriguing and mysterious subject with a wonderfully detailed setting, beautifully colored.
