Kinpeibai Soga no tamamono, 1860

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene from the play "Kinpeibai Soga no tamamono" at the Nakamura Theater in Edo of a man and a woman held captive, each bound with a rope around their upper torso. The samurai Kyumonryu Shirokichi stands at left wearing a striking black coat decorated with a dragon, an apprentice tied up at his feet. In the center, Saimon'ya Keijiro pulls a hot poker from the glowing coals of a hibachi as he grabs another apprentice by the shoulder. The captive beauty at right looks down with an alarmed expression as a matron stands behind her with a pipe and a tobacco set in hand. An elegant black lacquer box rests on a shelf in the wall at upper right, the blue sliding panels below decorated with plum blossoms. The actors in the left panel are Onoe Baiko 4.5 and Kataoka Gado II, and Kataoka Nizaemon VIII plays Keijiro. Expressive figures in a nicely detailed interior setting.
