Matches for Thirty-six Selected Poems - Handsome design from Kunisada's 1856 - 1857 series pairing kabuki scenes with Japan's famous "Thirty-six Poems," an anthology of waka verses by 6th - 9th century poets. Each print features actors in nicely detailed settings, with a still-life by Gengyo Miyagi and a poem in an inset above. Beautifully detailed and printed, many designs include deluxe publishing techniques such as embossing or burnishing. The series title is also translated as "The Thirty-six Outstanding Poems." An interesting group with expressive figures.
Bando Shuka I as Dote no Oroku and Matsumoto Koshiro VI as Gantetsubo, 1856 - Handsome kabuki scene featuring Bando Shuka I as the beauty Dote no Oroku and Matsumoto Koshiro VI as Gantetsubo. Oroku watches as her companion toys with an official sprawling on the ground, one foot resting on the neck of his victim. The ruffian holds a drawstring purse behind his back, sneering down at the struggling man. He wears tattered black monk's robes, and has a tied-dyed cloth tied around his head. The beauty watches calmly, her scarf caught between her teeth. An attractive print with fine shading on the night sky, and burnishing on the black robe and black obi.
