Prints from the Age of the Samurai - With this group of Edo era prints opening at incentivized low bids, take a moment to be transported back to the age when samurai ruled Japan. During the Tokugawa Shogunate, Japan enjoyed a period of relative peace and prosperity for more than 250 years. Woodblock prints captured scenes from daily life, warriors and battles, the beauties of the Yoshiwara pleasure district, kabuki, and travelers along the Tokaido and Kisokaido roads. Soga hyoban hiyoku otoko, 1830 - Handsome kabuki portrait of Bando Mitsugoro II as the otokodate or street knight Chobei in "Soga hyoban hiyoku otoko" at the Ichimura Theater in Edo. He sneers angrily as he looks ahead, his hands tucked beneath his sleeves. His kimono is shaded from blue to tan, and he has a white cloth draped over one shoulder. A shakuhachi flute is tucked into the back of his obi. An expressive figure.
