Kanadehon Chushingura, 1859

Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Kanadehon Chushingura," the classic drama about the 47 ronin, at the Ichimura Theater in Edo. At left, Nakagaki Genzo pours a cup of sake, frowning worriedly at Yozaemon's wife, Osami, who kneels beside him. She grins back at him happily, a pipe in her hand and a tobacco set on the floor nearby. Blue panels decorated with pine branches line the back of the room, with softly shaded curtains hanging in the doorway. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Kodanji IV and Azuma Ichinojo I. Nice expressive figures in a well-detailed setting.

Artist - Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 19 1/8"

Condition - Good detail. Backed with paper, a few repairs, creasing at sides.
