Scene from Matsu icho tsurukame soga, 1854

Comments - Dramatic scene from the kabuki play "Matsu icho tsurukame soga" at the Nakamura Theater in Edo of the samurai Onzoshi Tametomo fighting off attackers at an onsen or spa at Ishiyama. In the center, Tametomo wields a large board as a weapon, sending several guards flying and simultaneously grabbing a man by the collar and stepping on another. At bottom center, an elderly man watches in alarm. Sitting on a stool at bottom right, Yoshitomo glares at Tametomo with a tight-lipped frown. The samurai Kaneko no Juro standing behind him carries a coil of heavy rope, presumably to tie up Tametomo after they capture him. The actors include Kataoka Gado II as Tametomo, Kataoka Toragoro I as Juro, and Morita Kanya XI as Yoshitomo. A lively scene with expressive figures.
