The Hour of the Goat, 1859

Series; Twelve Hours with Genji

The Hour of the Goat, 1859 - Handsome triptych showing Prince Genji and his guests enjoying music and dancing at his palace. Sitting on a cushion at left, the nobleman plays the flute while a beauty in the center taps out a rhythm on a hand drum place on her shoulder. At right, two young boys dance, striking graceful poses with folding fans. A third child watches from bottom center. All three are dressed in similar kimono with subtle burnished patterns on the solid colored areas and embossing on the white parts of the sleeves, tucked into long pants that trail beneath their feet. The hour of the goat corresponds to 1:00 to 3:00 pm in the afternoon when the day was divided into twelve, two-hour periods named with the animals of the zodiac. A charming design.
