Comments - Interesting scene from the play "Satomi Hakkenden" at the Ichimura Theater in Edo, the tale of eight warriors who are the offspring of a mystical union between a princess and a dog. Here, Shinsuke, who is actually the eight dog warrior Inue Shibei in disguise, visits the courtesan Shukugawara Omoto. The beauty playfully tugs on the end of his sash, smiling at him and urging him to stay. He takes hold of the obi with a grin as a young girl offers him a cup of tea on a wooden tray. A folding screen behind them depicts a blossoming plum tree in spring, with a striped kimono tossed over the top edge of it. The actors are Ichimura Uzaemon XIII (?) as the young girl Kojoku Ohana, Nakamura Fukusuke I, and Iwai Kumesaburo III. A charming subject with a nicely detailed setting.
