Bando Shuka I as Miuraya Urazato and Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Kasugaya Tokijiro, 1851

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene featuring the courtesan Miuraya Urazato and her sweetheart, Kasugaya Tokijiro. Urazato's employer has learned of her affair with Tokijiro and ordered her to stop seeing him, but the couple continues to meet in secret. Here, Tokijiro looks over his shoulder with an unhappy frown as the beauty playfully tugs on the white towel in his hand. She tilts her head and smiles coyly, her kimono trailing on the floor around her. From left, the actors are Bando Shuka I and Ichikawa Danjuro VIII. Nicely detailed with soft shading on the beauty's kimono and the top of the page.

Artist - Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 19 1/4"

Condition - Good detail. Vertical fold in left panel. A few creases at edges and small repairs, wrinkling at bottom center of left panel.
